Black hair care is one area where many people are confused. There are lots of myths about the proper way to take care of it. While this is true, doing the proper research can take all of the guesswork out of it. Here are several dos and don’ts that will help you keep your hair in the best shape.
DO keep your hair clean. Many people believe the misconception that unclean hair grows better than hair that is free of dirt, oils and hair products. This is not the truth at all. You should wash your hair at least once a week and use a deep conditioner to help it retain its moisture.
DON’T go to bed without protecting your hair. You should put a scarf over your hair while you sleep in order to protect the hair from damage. This scarf should be made of silk or satin since cotton promotes breakage. If you are not going to use a scarf, make sure that your pillowcase is made of the right material.
DO comb your hair every day in order to remove any tangles or kinks. This is a great way to stop the hair from falling out. Once hair is too snarled, it may be necessary to cut it in order to maintain it. If you are trying to grow your hair, this will definitely be a problem. A wide-toothed comb is recommended since it will help remove tangles a lot easier.
DON’T forget to moisturize your hair every day. This is one of the golden rules of black hair care. It is very easy for hair to become dry and damaged, so you need to do everything possible to stop this. While it is advised that you use a deep natural conditioner weekly, the product you use daily does not have to be as heavy.
DO wait until your hair is dry before combing and brushing it. It is very easy for hair to become tangled with it is wet. If you notice this, you should gently rub your fingers through your tresses to loosen things up. The only exception to this rule is when you have conditioner in your hair. At that time it is okay to use a comb.
DON’T wear weave, wigs and hair extensions for long periods of time. This is a good way to stop your hair from breathing and can lead even to hair loss. There is nothing wrong with wearing any of these, but it should be done in moderation. It is best to allow some time between hairstyles for the hair to breath. Ideally this should be between six and eight weeks.
The reality is that black hair care is a bit more complex than people know. This is why there are many people walking around with terribly maintained hair. if you don’t want to be one of them, you should follow all of the advice given here. Pass it along to your friends and loved ones so they can reap the benefits of great hair as well.
